Norman de Garis Davies, then Surveyor for the
Archaeological Survey of the Egypt Exploration
Fund, was small in stature but possessed a super
abundant energy to tackle formidable tasks that
would daunt larger men. From 1901 to 1907 Davies
worked at El-Amarna for a yearly stint of
between six to eight weeks, usually in the
winter, but sometimes in the heat of summer,
during which time he succeeded in copying all
the decorated and inscribed private tombs and
the Boundary Stelae. Herr Schliepback is
responsible for this photograph of Davies
snatching some ease outside his quarters in the
tomb of May, which succeeds in bringing out the
serious driving force that was so often
concealed behind Davies' impish high spirits and
drolleries. |
