Funerary Banqueting Room

Photographer:

Stephane Compoint
Title:
Funerary Banqueting Room
Description:

Just below the surface, and miraculously spared by the bulldozers, this funerary banqueting room belongs to a collective tomb. It is easily recognizable as such by the benches cut out of the rock on three of its sides. Mattresses were placed on them for the diners who were sharing, symbolically, a meal with their departed loved ones. These meals took place on the day of the funeral, forty days after the death and on its anniversaries and on certain fixed feast days when the dead were honored.
