New Pharaonic mummy found

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Egypt State Information Service
Frustratingly vague, but here it is anyway:

Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities has stated that the mummy which had been happened upon at farms in the governorate of Al-Fayoum are pharohnic and priceless.

A council’s committee said that the mummy belonged to an important figure in the pharaohnic age.
It cited advanced and excellent mummification […]

Rising groundwater threatens monuments

Monday, December 31st, 2007

MCOT English News
The fact that variations on this story keeps rearing its head is a sad reflection on the threat to many monuments in Egypt. As well as highlighting the problem at Giza, this piece suggests that solutions have been proposed, but were rejected by the SCA who want more immediate fixes.

Groundwater in Cairo’s Giza […]

Remembering the Millennium at the Pyramids

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Oh My News
There had been criticism leading up to the event as tickets did not sell so rapidly at first to justify the expense - hence my ability to purchase a ticket so easily the day before the concert. Ramadan fell over the Millennium that year so some Islamic groups complained bitterly about the cost […]

New URL for Saqqara/Imhotep story

Monday, December 31st, 2007

A few days ago I posted an extract from a piece that appeared on the Sunday Post website about Ian Matheson’s hopes for the discovery of the tomb of Imhotep. Unfortunately, the original URL for this story has now expired. However Chris Townsend has pointed out that another web page is now available with the […]

Egyptian Gazette (URL will expire shortly - navigate to Tourism link)
By Salah Attia:

The clock is ticking down to bid farewell to one of the bleakest years, locally, regionally and internationally. Worse, hours before 2007 would fade away ex-Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated.

However, as long as domestic tourism industry is concerned, the 2007’s harvest […]

Personal: If you usually phone/text me on my mobile . . .

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Sorry to use the blog as a personal communication tool! But to all of you who usually contact me on my mobile phone, please don’t do so for the time being. As I took my jeans out of the washing machine yesterday, my mobile phone fell out of a pocket with a sad, wet thud. […]

Pretty views of Lake Nasser

Monday, December 31st, 2007

I’m in a bit of a tearing rush today, so instead of some sensible archeaological photos, here are a couple of touristy photographs taken from (and of) the cruise boat that I was lucky enough to be on in March 2007. Click the thumbnail to see the full sized image.

Hello to All

Due to technical problems with the site before Christmas, and my absence for a few days over the Christmas period, I’m sorry to say that there is a large gap on the site.  I have updated it today and the site seems to be working well, so hopefully it will continue to remain […]

Archaeogate Egittologia
Thanks again to Pierfranco Dotti for pointing me to another English-language article on the Italian archaelogy website Archaeogate, which has an Egyptology section. There is an update about the site of Narmouthis dating to November 2007, but not previously listed here.
The archaeological Mission of the Pisa University - with Prof. Rosary Pintaudi, Messina University […]

KV63 and KV10 Update

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

I have become so accustomed to clicking on the KV63 link on my links site that I nearly clicked straight off again without clocking the fact that the KV63 site has been updated. It’s only a brief offering, but it does contain some useful information so here it is in its entirety:

The 2008 Season
My departure […]
