The residents of Gourna on the West Bank at Luxor are moving, but not to the city originally planned for them some 60 years ago by the renowned architect, Hassan Fathy.

Jane - it’s really good to see a reference to Hassan Fathy’s architecture. In his book “Two Villages”, he writes that the main reason the government did not take up his ideas was lobbying from the concrete lobby, whose house prices were about 5 times that of the mud brick he was recommending. Also, as the architecture was primarily Nubian, the Qurnawis would not move, as they looked upon Nubians as figures of either hate, or fun - much as the British look upon the Irish.
