I am creating an art project using monies from all over the world. I would like to find out more information about the designs on the 50 Piastres, the 1 Pound and the 20 Pound bills.

More specifically, I would like to know the stories behind the bills. For example, the 50 Piastres has a picture of Ramses II. What can you tell me about the entire scene? The boat, the lotus or flowers in a circle, the hieroglyphics behind the chariot and the small hieroglyphic in the lower right hand corner. There are also flowers behind Ramses along with a vertical pattern of colors. Does mean anything?

The 1 pound bill features the statues of Ramses II found at Abu Simbel. Do you know what the figure is in the middle, between the statues? There are two rows of symbols on the top and bottom of the bill. It looks like a bird missing its head at the top and then the head and something else is on the bottom. Does this represent anything? On the right upper corner is a hierogliph or some message. Also, the statues are framed with a traingular yet circular pattern.

The third bill which is a twenty pound note is very colorful. I assume this is Ramses in a chariot? What do the three scenes or hierogliphics represent? Is the circular star pattern a symbol of something and there are the circular flowers seen on the other bills.

If you have any idea where I can find this information, please contact me at: Cherylcusick@comcast.net

    Thank you for your time.

As I recall, the LE stood for “Egytian Pound”. From my collection (brought back after backpacking around Egypt for 5 weeks just before Sadat got assasinated), I have a 50 piastre note which isn´t shown here. The front is a beige colour with a redish bar across the top and brown across the bottom. Depicted is the big mosque in Cairo. The reverse side shows Ramses in dark grey with a blue, red, green, and white design across the top and left side. It says: Central bank Of Egypt and 50 Fifty Piastres. It´s the only one I saw while I was there - got it in change.
