Betrest1st Dynasty
This queen, whose name is uncertain, is thought to have been the mother
of King Semerkhet, the penultimate king of the First Dynasty; she was
therefore probably the wife of King Anedjib. It is significant that the
mothers of kings are mentioned at this early period, suggesting that at
the beginning of dynastic history the blood-royal, and hence the right to
the kingship, was already considered to descend through the female line.
